In 1957, Mercedes replaced the original 300SL by the 300SL Roadster, a simplified version abandoning the doors "Gullwing" for a more conventional system. But the compromise for this movement towards orthodoxy was a slightly softer and more relaxing suspension, to satisfy the American clientele looking for this type of supercar, but also a slightly more muscular engine.
